Getting High on a Cruise Ship

Posted by Scott Markowitz | Aug 21, 2025 | 0 Comments

🚢 Taking an end of summer cruise?  Despite the growing legalization of cannabis in many areas, bringing it on a cruise ship, even as medical marijuana, presents significant risks. This is because cruise ships, especially those departing from US ports, operate under federal law, which still classifies cannabis as illegal.

Here's a breakdown of important points to keep in mind:

Strict prohibitions
  • Federal Law: US federal law prohibits cannabis in any form (flower, edibles, vapes, oils, etc.) on cruise ships, even if you have a medical marijuana card.
  • Cruise Line Policies: Most major cruise lines have strict zero-tolerance drug policies, explicitly listing cannabis and cannabis-related products (including CBD and its derivatives) as prohibited items. For example, Virgin Voyages bans "all illegal drugs, non-prescribed controlled substances, medically prescribed marijuana or synthetic marijuana and CBD products".
Potential consequences
  • Denied Boarding or Disembarkation: You risk being denied boarding or removed from the ship mid-cruise if caught with cannabis, according to Royal Caribbean and Carnival.
  • Legal Trouble: Cruise lines may report you to local authorities, potentially leading to arrests, fines, or even jail time, depending on the laws of the port where you are caught.
  • Lifelong Ban: Some cruise lines have implemented lifetime bans for passengers caught violating drug policies.
  • Seizure and Loss of Product: Cannabis and related items will be confiscated and disposed of without compensation.
Enforcement
  • Security Screenings: Cruise lines utilize security screenings, including baggage checks and sometimes drug-sniffing dogs, during the boarding process to detect prohibited items.
  • Random Inspections: Cruise lines may conduct random cabin searches or respond to complaints from other passengers.
  • International Implications: Cruises visit various ports with differing laws. Bringing cannabis, even if purchased in a legal port, back onto the ship or attempting to travel with it internationally can lead to serious legal complications in those jurisdictions.
Recommendations
  • Avoid Bringing Cannabis: The safest approach is to not bring any cannabis products on your cruise vacation.
  • Consult Your Physician: If you rely on medical cannabis, discuss alternative therapies or strategies for managing your condition during your cruise with your doctor.
  • Check Local Laws: If you plan to consume cannabis in ports of call where it's legal, research and understand the specific local laws regarding possession and consumption before arriving. Remember that you are typically not allowed to bring purchases back onto the ship.😎
