Myth Busting Monday

❌ Myth: You have to answer every question a police officer asks. 

✅ Truth: You have the right to remain silent. Use it wisely. 

You are not legally obligated to answer questions posed by law enforcement, even if you are detained or arrested.  To exercise your right to remain silent, you should clearly state out loud that you wish to remain silent.  You generally cannot be arrested or punished solely for refusing to answer questions.

However, refusing to cooperate could raise suspicion in the eyes of law enforcement.  You are required to provide your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance when pulled over for traffic stops.  And it is always a good idea to speak with a lawyer before answering any questions, especially if you are the subject of an investigation. 🗣️👮‍♂️
